The Hill House

Happisburgh, Norfolk NR12 0PW

< Return to listing

On a site close to the rugged Norfolk shoreline, The Hill House has a church and a lighthouse for neighbours. This family-friendly 16th century coaching inn is run by Sue and Clive Stockton, who are the most welcoming and attentive of hosts. Equally friendly are their two dogs Major, a Belgian Shepherd, and Cocoa, a delightful mix. The inn offers an excellent range of food and drink that visitors can enjoy in the beamed bar with its woodburning stove and pictures of bygone days, in the restaurant, in the family room or out in the lovely beer garden. The bar and restaurant menus provide an impressive choice of dishes to suit all tastes and appetites, from sandwiches, burgers and omelettes to steaks, savoury pies, salmon and lobster. There are plenty of vegetarian main courses, and some scrumptious sweets to round off a meal.

The theme nights, held every other Friday from October to March and featuring a different world cuisine, are always very popular occasions. Six cask ales are on tap, including Adnams Best, Shepherd Neame Spitfire and Buffy''s Elementary Ale brewed specially for the pub. Every summer solstice the pub hosts a marvellous beer festival, with at least 40 real ales and ciders, live music and other entertainment the date for 2005 is 16th to 20th June. The Hill House was a favourite haunt of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who wrote The Dancing Men while staying here in 1903. Happisburgh nearly had a railway then; the tracks did not get as far as Happisburgh before the Company involved folded but the old signal box still stands in the pub''s garden. It now houses one of the letting bedrooms, and there are two further comfortable, spacious rooms in the main building.
